Rarebear (from Woodnet handtools forum) got me started with the Type 17 (WW II era) No 4. He refurbishes old planes with amazing results, and I was certainly pleased with mine.
Then I ran across two Type 17 No 5′s on the ‘Bay, both within 24 hrs of each other. Nobody seemed to want to bid on them so I grabbed them…. $12 for one, $15 for the other. I learned a lot about plane refurbishing with these tools.
Here they are all my “War Planes” after cleaning them up (shown next to the Rarebear specimen):
Then I picked up a Stanley Bailey Type 17 No 3 (again, from eBay):

Here’s my Stanley Bailey No 7, Type 9 (after a complete rehab):

I also picked up a No. 12-1/2 veneer scraper in really nice shape.

I have some more to post, and I will update as time permits…

It is amazing how well hand planes can work. Do you have any block planes? I like the ones with the adjustable throat plates the best myself.

Yes, I do. One of my favorites for most jobs is shown in the picture at the top of the “Draw Boring” page (under My Shop/My workbench).
